The Nordic Swan - guides you to a sustainable production and consumption
When it comes to reducing the negative impact on climate and environment, conversion to a sustainable production and consumption of products and services is essential. To get some insight on this matter, we decided to write a blog post about The Nordic Swan Ecolabel and how it coincides with the global goals. The text is written by The Nordic Swan Ecolabel (one of ASAP's two founders!). We hope you like it!
The Nordic Swan Ecolabel, the official ecolabel of the Nordic countries, is an effective tool in transition to a sustainable future. The primary focus is on environmental aspects, but the focus is also on health and social aspects. The Nordic Swan Ecolabel actively contributes to 10 of the 17 global goals where the main focus is on goal #12. According to Global Goal #12, a sustainable production and consumption entail an efficient use of resources, consideration of ecosystem services, and a reduced impact of toxic chemicals. This is not only an advantage for the environment, but also for social and economic circumstances! Therefore, sustainable production and consumption are important for readjusting to a green economy and sustainable development.
What does the Nordic Swan Ecolabel want to do?
Since 1989, the Nordic Swan Ecolabel has supported and guided consumers in choosing environmentally conscious products and services with the aim to make it easier to embrace a sustainable lifestyle. This corresponds to the sub-goal of promoting sustainable public procurement in goal #12. As Ragnar Unge, Chairman of Nordic Ecolabelling Board of Directors say, ”We see that the work of the Nordic Swan Ecolabel aligns with many of the global sustainability goals. We want to help companies, buyers, and consumers to contribute to meeting the goals by producing and prioritising products carrying the Nordic Swan.
Why do we need the Nordic Swan Ecolabel?
The Nordic Swan Ecolabel sets requirements where it is possible to achieve real environmental improvements. The goal is to reduce the overall environmental impact of the production and consumption as much as possible. The Nordic Swan Ecolabel has a lifecycle perspective which means careful examinations and controls of everything from raw materials to production, use and waste issues before a product or service can be approved. The requirements are based on promoting sustainable use of resources, recycling, and reducing waste volumes in all stages of the lifecycle. Therefore, the Nordic Swan Ecolabel contributes to reducing harmful exposure to harmful chemicals, both for those who produce the products and for those who use them, as well as reducing pollution to air, water, and soil. Since the production of the eco- labeled products takes place all over the world, the Nordic Swan Ecolabel also contributes to spreading environmentally friendly productions to countries outside of the Nordic region.
So, in what way are you contributing to a more sustainable world when consuming?
